Traditional fish and chips restaurant in Blackpool

The "Yorkshire Fisheries" in Blackpool, England, is a traditional restaurant that has made a name for itself as the oldest fish-and-chips establishment in the city. Since its founding in 1907, when potato deliveries were made by horse-drawn carts, it has evolved into an institution known for its quality and consistency. Today, it is run by the Vasilou family, who have taken over the management since 1989, proudly combining a long history with modern standards. The restaurant is not only a popular attraction for tourists but also a favorite among locals, underscoring its reputation as one of the best "chippies" in Blackpool.

The kitchen of "Yorkshire Fisheries" places great emphasis on fresh, high-quality ingredients. The "Haddock Special" is a highlight, featuring fresh haddock served in a light, crispy batter, accompanied by golden chips and homemade "mushy peas" – a combination that perfectly captures the classic British flavor. Equally popular is the "Cod," which is offered either fresh or "frozen at sea" to preserve its freshness before being filleted on-site. The potatoes are peeled and processed into chips daily, highlighting the care taken in preparation. For those looking for variety, there are also homemade pies, such as the "Steak & Ale Pie," whose hearty filling and crispy crust are a true delight. The dishes are always freshly prepared, which may mean some waiting time, but this is appreciated by guests as a sign of quality.

The ambiance at "Yorkshire Fisheries" is a successful blend of tradition and modern coziness. The restaurant was recently renovated, offering a bright, clean environment with comfortable seating for up to 126 people—ideal for families or larger groups. Black-and-white photos on the walls tell the story of the establishment and give it a nostalgic charm, while the open layout creates an inviting atmosphere. In addition to the restaurant, there is a separate takeaway area that increases flexibility for guests who want to take their meal with them, perhaps for a snack at the nearby beach. Background music adds a pleasant mood without being intrusive.

The service is often described as warm and attentive, with the staff, under the leadership of owner Maria Menelaou, always striving to provide guests with a special experience. The team values preserving the tradition of the establishment and has received numerous awards, including the Quality Award from the National Federation of Fish Friers and recognition from TripAdvisor. Sustainability also plays a role: the fish is sourced responsibly, and the restaurant offers options like lightly fried fish for those who prefer a lighter meal. The drink selection includes classic British teas that pair perfectly with the hearty dishes, as well as a small but fine selection of refreshments.

Good location from Blackpool Tower, Nice friendly, welcoming staff. Lots of spaces to sit doen. Great hygiene, staff always cleaning the table and wiping down the seats. Menu is great lots of combination of traditional chippy meals. I had a fish with an option for 1/2 chips, so I didn't need to have a big pile of chips, which other chippy's don't do that. Their curry sauce is the very spicy kinds and it was delicious. I'll go there again next time I'm that way. Very good, really recommend.

I had an amazing experience at Yorkshire Fisheries, where I enjoyed what I can confidently say is the best fish and chips in the UK. I ordered the King Cod Fish & Chips, and it was absolutely delicious—crispy on the outside, tender and flaky on the inside, and cooked to perfection. The portion size was incredibly generous; in fact, one King Cod Fish & Chips is easily enough for two people. Every bite was full of flavor, and it was clear that the ingredients were fresh and of high quality. What made my visit even more enjoyable was the outstanding service. The staff, Renee and Chloe, were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive. From the moment I walked in, they made me feel at home. They took the time to introduce the menu, gave great recommendations, and ensured that everything was just right. Their warm and professional attitude truly made a difference, making the whole experience even better. The atmosphere in the restaurant was also great—clean, cozy, and comfortable. It’s the kind of place that feels both traditional and inviting, perfect for enjoying a classic British meal. I can see why Yorkshire Fisheries has such a great reputation. If you’re looking for top-quality fish and chips with excellent service and generous portions, this is the place to go. I highly recommend it, and I’ll definitely be coming back whenever I’m in the area.

Quality food, reasonable prices and the staff are super friendly! Definitely worth the trip off of the front, we would not go anywhere else for our chippy now, 100% recommend. The portions are large too, the bear curry sauce!

Times have changed. For decades, the king of fish and chips in Blackpool used to be The Cottage, but, alas, it is not the place it used to be. The crown has been passed to Yorkshire Fisheries, which, apart from the name, offers one of the finest fish and chip dining experience in the North West. Friendly service, excellent beautifully-cooked fresh fish and all the standard accoutrements. Fantastic value for money as well. You'll have to go to Blackpool town centre to find them, which may be a plus, or, in our case, a minus, but it was worth the trip. Thank you - great job.

OMG, I was lucky 18 months ago to be in Newquay where I had one of the BEST fish and chips takes out, chips were fried in beef gravy . This place is on a par.. see picture. Really good.. I know there are quite a few chippys in BP... Difficult to see how you can top this. Keep it up, pure quality. Need to reduce prices a bit, Tower Fisheries very good and half what you charge.
